AHFA – Session Stylist of the Year

Congratulations to Laud contributor Richard Kavanagh for taking out the title of Australian Session Stylist of the Year at the Australian Hair Fashion Awards. We asked him a few questions about his well-deserved win last night.

Congratulations on your win last night! How did it feel to win session stylist of the year?
Thank you! I was actually surprised that I won. The finalists were of such high calibre that I expected one of the others to win. I hadn’t even prepared any notes for a thank you speech! And today, I’ve been totally overwhelmed with the love and support I’ve received from people in my social circle.

How important is validation from your industry peers?
Being recognized by my peers is amazing. As a freelance session stylist I don’t get to work with other hairdressers much so I don’t really see what they’re up to apart from on social media. So it’s really great to have that feeling of being a part of a larger community and being validated with the award makes me proud of how hard I work and makes it all seem worthwhile.

What drives your creativity?
For me the collaborative process is what drives my creativity. I love art and art history and imagining ways I can incorporate what see and feel from different painters and sculptors in my work, then bringing that to the collaborative process of working with photographers, fashion editors and creative directors push and pull and mold those ideas into reality.

Do you think it’s crucial to always reinvent your career?
I think there’s a paradox there. On the one hand it’s essential to define the aesthetic and your personal style. It’s what sets you apart from the rest and makes you uniquely valuable. At the same time you have to constantly evolve and improve in order to remain relevant.

What’s the best piece of advice you could give to aspiring session stylists?
Get really really good at the basics. And be flexible. Pay attention to everything. Keep quiet and smile. 😄
