Issue # 7 DISTORTED
Interview by RICHI GRISILLO
A talent beyond his age: Hermiz has been a hairstylist for almost a decade and has already hit the jackpot in many paths in his hairdressing career. From winning New Creative Force two years in a row for Hair Expo Australia 2015 and 2016 and achieving third place in the globally renowned AIPP hair competition in the ‘avant-garde’ category, his many accolades have earned him a reputation of ‘one to watch’ in the industry.
How did you first get into hair, where did your career start?
I never wanted to be a hairdresser in the first place! I actually wanted to be a fashion designer, but I did have hairdressing in the other hand, it was the hair up side of hairdressing that attracted me to it, the creative part of it!
What kind of training did you receive?
Old school training! The best! It’s where all your foundation is! It wasn’t as intense as counting back 20 years ago but it did teach me a lot of things
What is your favourite hair trend and why?
Anything that’s current, I’m a sucker for fashion and what is trendy!
What are your hero hair products in your kit?.
Dry shampoo for those dirty days! Haha
What’s one career highlight you have had?
Getting a job at Joey scandizzo salon! Hahaha I sound biased but it’s the truth! Long story!
Who is your hair muse (someones hair that you are drawn to)?
Ahhhuumm!!! , I have a few! Sometimes it changes! But Bridget Bardot and Kate moss I would say just because their hair is always looking sexy!
Who is your hair hero (someone whos work inspires or excites you) ?
Again! I’m gonna sound biased! Joey scandizzo! This guy pretty much knows no wrong, he is blessed in many different ways and knows what he is talking about! Yes we had major fights and arguments in the past but when I look at what he has achieved then it means he’s done something right! His ambition inspires me and I always pray to God to have just a small portion of that ambition! He’s a go getter!
Is there are particular era in time that inspires you?
Any time! Any era! Any where! There is always beauty within everything 🙂
Who are your creative idols and why?
It goes from hairdressers to fashion designers to performers! Again, it always changes but the ones that stand out a lot are The late Alexander McQueen and John Galiano when he used to design for Christian Dior house! Their imaginations and theatrical act really attracted me and I drew heaps of my inspirations from them
What’s next for you?
Who knows! I know that I am working on opening my own salon but then at the same time I’m not the type of person that you can lock me down! I kinda need to be everywhere at the same time lol so go figure!
If you could give one piece of advice for the next generation of Hair artist what would it be?
It isn’t easy and you gotta work for it to taste the real result! I haven’t even reached exactly what I want so I’m still working hard for it
What is your favorite image you have created/ been apart of and why?
I’m not sure to be honest! All my collections are so different from one to another, and each collection tells a story! I do know one thing for sure though, I always end up not liking what I do or what I create! Ever! Not sure why!
